Eating out and writing about food, I came up with a rating system, that helps me to evaluate the restaurant more objectively considering all the important dimensions and not falling for the halo effect, the overall impression of the experience or the personality of the owner or server.

Crucina is the raw vegan restaurant in Madrid that has been on our Spain travel list for a while. Today we had a long lunch here. I only had my iPhone on me, the pics don’t do the food justice.
We more than recommend checking out the restaurant, not only if you are a vegan or a raw foody! It’s one of the few raw food restaurants in Spain. With its hearty, Greek twist, the dishes are flavourful and filling. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service simply awesome.
Conveniently located in the city center, Crucina is the only raw vegan restaurant in Madrid. We were super excited to visit and to try all the dishes we checked out on instagram and google beforehand. Otherwise, we did not expect much, just wanted to dive into gourmet raw food we have been successfully avoiding for months, except for an occasional raw cashew ice cream.
My overall rating of the restaurant compared to a “normal” restaurant in its price range is definitely 5 stars. The quality of the raw food, the mostly organic ingredients and the attention to the detail while creating these raw food dishes compared to the food at a regular restaurant food are winning all the way here. I will provide a more in depth rating, comparing this restaurant to other raw food restaurants down below.
Let’s see what we had! We ordered the tasting menu, that was different, than on the menu that day, the burger and the pizza.
Lemon milk
macadamia-, brazil-, and almond nutmilk; avocado, xylitol, lemon juice and zest, berries
The lemon milk (part of the menu 35 €) was amazing. It tasted like a sweetened condensed milk. The flavor and the texture were amazing, with a hint of lemon. I didn’t feel like eating the berries though, they seemed not washed. I know, many restaurants don’t wash the berries for the looks, I prefer them washed.
Moussaka
3 kinds tomatoes, avocado, sunflower seeds and sage base, macadamia cream with coconut sugar crust
This moussaka (part of the menu 35 €) was great. Served on a warm plate it had this “out-of-the-oven” feel to it. The tomato layer was flavorful, sweet and savoury. The base was meaty, the cheese layer unbelievably cheesy, even texture-wise.
meat balls
sunflower seeds, almond, curry, coconut sugar, with broccolini
The meatballs (part of the menu 35 €) were very tasty. Nice soft juicy meaty texture.
burger
zucchini, sunflower seeds, curry. raw bread, raw mayo, greens and veggies
The burger (14 €) was delicious, the taste and texture was similar to the meatballs. The dish is super filling, a perfect main dish. We got an oil free version at our request, which was awesome.
Pizza
seed and veggie crust with sprouted sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds, and cashews; nutmeat, mayo sauce, tomatoes, arugula
The pizza ( 11.25 €) was very tasty and filling. The soft crust, the sauce and the meat combined were on point, with a fresh touch of tomato and arugula. The meat tasted meaty, a perfect balance of juicy softness and bite. We got a customised pizza without oil. So happy about the substitution.
Raw bread
chickpea, flax, bell pepper, tomato, pimento
The bread (free) was soft, spicy and amazing. We wanted to eat it with a dish, but while waiting, we devoured it, even before taking a picture, here you see the small left-over piece. Tasted like a delicious pizza.
The menu at Crucina
The menu was surprisingly small for a completely raw restaurant, many items were not available and the menu itself and the tables were dirty. I, with mine OCD tendencies, spoke out the option of leaving to Stefan, but I’m glad we stayed.
Hygiene
I’m a huge hygiene fan when it comes to food, and here, couple of things were disconcerting. Dirty tables, piles of dishes even the restaurant just opened after a day off, the server coughing in the kitchen and while serving, touching the food while serving, placing cutlery directly on the table, food scrapes on servers hands to name the once I observed without seeing the kitchen. Nothing really a big deal, but each of those make me less exited about going back.
Special requests
The restaurant made many alteration to our dishes as soon as we asked for it. We only asked for no extra oil, but the kitchen redid many dishes so there were no oils in dressing, just WOW! And everything tasted amazing, sometimes the dishes really on the oil for the taste, not here, everything tasted as if it was created oil free.
Waiting time
The waiting time was very long, I’m not sure if it was a misunderstanding, I specifically asked for serving everything at once, but the dishes came long time apart, we spend over two hours there, for a lunch way too long for my German taste. Maybe the restaurant wanted us to enjoy the food or the kitchen was simply slow, hard to say.
As I have timestamps on my iPhone pictures, here is the exact time.
Arriving 1:09
Menu 1:11
1st dish 1:49
2nd dish 2:14
free bread 2:25
3rd dish 2:35
4th dish 2:59
5th dish 3:23
The raw food takes a long time to prep, it surely does, but many components are pre-made. Then there were the alterations we requested. On the other hand, there were not so many other guests.
Other than us, there were 2 more parties served, 4 businessmen on lunch break and a family of 4-6, don’t remember exactly. They all stayed almost as long for lunch as we.
Quality
The food is mostly organic, except for the nuts, we eat 100% organic at home and for us, a place that serves conventional ingredients even partially, will never become a go to spot on the regular basis. Considering all the dishes were nut based, we would prefer the nuts to be organic. And sure, we would be willing pay more for all organic ingredients.
Taste
The food tasted great, the flavors were rich and the texture great.
Creativity
The dishes were rather simple, there was nothing I haven’t had before in a similar form at couple of other raw food restaurants. Some parts of the dishes were surpassingly creative though, like the taste and texture of the dessert and the cheese layer on the moussaka. The plating was not amazing for most dishes, the veggies were not cut nicely and the broccolini had a dried out stem I would cut off first thing making a salad for myself.
Portion sizes
The portion sizes are on point. We shares 5 dishes plus bread, and it was almost too much even we were very hungry. A starter and a main dish are super sufficient for one person. Add a salad or a dessert, and you will be more than full.
My rating of Crucina in Madrid
Scale 1 (lowest possible rating) – 5 (highest possible rating). More about how I rate the restaurants here.
Rawlicious is a nice little all raw restaurant with a to-go service. We planed on eating there first thing in the morning, the door sign said they open at 9 am, but what the sign doesn’t say, they don’t serve food before 11 am …
I preordered, but ended up coming back several times and got my food by around 11:30. Rereading this, I don’t have a bitter aftertaste, we liked the food.
What we had
Herb & Onion Flatbreads
nut and seed flatbreads with dill cashew nut cheese topped with cherry tomatoes & caramelized onions
We ate these Herb & Onion Flatbreads ($10) right in the car. They smelled so good and tasted even better! I could swear they tasted like a very good Tarte flambée. The crust was great, the nut cheese creamy. The Onion, really juicy and spicy! Maybe the dill was too much. And I love dill, but not a whole bunch on a tiny piece of bread. The recipe is in the Rawlicous recipe book.
Taco Wrap
seasoned nut loaf, guacamole, romaine lettuce, salsa & almond nut cheese wrapped in a collard leaf
We had the really good Taco Wrap ($9.50). I never had such a delicious collard leave wrap before. Usually, once you have a leaf wrapped around and greens inside, it’s hard to make it taste like something else than a salad. But here, the taco meat was so awesome, and the cheese rich and creamy, it was as far from a salad as it could possibly be! If I didn’t know it was raw vegan, I could have believed it’s real meat. This wrap was much better than the taco wrap I had later that day at another restaurant in Toronto.
Pesto Buckwheat Pizza
sprouted buckwheat & flax crust, cashew cheese marinara or pesto, daily toppings & topped with cashew parmesan
This pizza ($10) was a special, so glad I saw it smiling at me from the dehydrator. We ate the pizza on the plane, I know, things taste better on the plane, and this pizza tasted really good, super salty, but very good. Definitely something I would get the next time and will try to recreate it at home from the Rawlicous recipe book. Such an amazing idea to use pesto as a pizza sauce.
Quesadillas
cashew cheddar cheese, crumbled nut loaf, salsa, avocado, & romaine lettuce in a red pepper wrap. served with coleslaw
Quesadilla ($15), not a fan. It was pudding like, the wrap gave up on me completely 2h after it was prepared. The coleslaw was something in-between fresh and pickled, not how I like it at all.
BBQ Burger
cashew cheddar cheese, crumbled nut loaf, salsa, avocado, & romaine lettuce in a red pepper wrap. served with coleslaw
I assume it was the burger ($15), hard to tell from the pic and I did’t write a note for this one.
Our experience
So we were patient, we asked to pick up the chosen food at 11am saying that we have to go to the airport shortly after. The food wasn’t ready by 11:30, which was pretty devastating, as we ordered in advance and were insured it will be ready by 11:00.
I almost requested my money back as I arrived there at 11 and no sign of my food, but in the end I’m glad I didn’t. I liked the food at Rawlicious. Because of the horrible service, I still don’t understand why it took 2 people 2,5h to place the pre-made raw food dishes into the containers, they did it then in front of me after letting me wait for half in hour within 2 minutes.
Because of all the waiting, there was no time to take proper pics of the food, so I took them after the security check at the airport. The food went though a lot already. I see it as the representation of in what state the food gets to the customer considering the service at that place. But enough about personnel that hopefully gets trained or replaced before we will eat at Rawlicious again, what we definitely planning on doing next time we are in Toronto.
Menu at Rawlicous
The menu is small, but sufficient for a lunch. On Rawlisious’ website they claims to use as much organic as possible, the girls at the cafe assured us that everything is organic. Everything I saw in the open kitchen, like salad boxes, spices, veggies, was certified organic.
Most health food stores have raw organic cacao powder nowadays. If your store doesn’t carry it, you can order it online here.
Is cacao healthy or not?
Health benefits of cacao powder
Cocoa contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, zinc and iron. Since I only consume cocoa in small amounts, I do not rely on cocoa as a source of these minerals in my diet and eat it solely for the sake of taste.
Realth risks
Pesticides in cacao
The cocao is grown in tropical countries, where the regulations for pesticide use are very loose and pesticides are used, which are long banned here. Therefore, I only by certified organic cacao powder to avoid this health hazard and not to poison the environment and the growers unnecessarily.
Disadvantages of cocoa due to the caffeine content
Cacao contains caffeine as well as theobromine and can be irritating, especially if consumed in a large amount or if you consume it rarely. I try to eat cocoa only in the mornings to avoid insomnia.
Phytic acid in cacao
Cacao contains the phytic acid. Phytic acid can hamper the absorption of calcium, magnesium and zinc. I buy organic and fermented cocoa products, the phytic acid content is expected to be lower in these. Whether the cocoa is fermented or not can be found on the label or the product website.
Dates are the best sweetener. Medjool dates are juicy soft, fresh and wonderful for many recipes. Whether for raw cake or ice cream, ketchup or milk, so many creations are not only delicious but also healthier made with dates.
Why are dates so heathy read this study. Or watch the video.
Delicious, healthy, raw chocolate spread made with just 3 ingredients. With avocado and dates, vegan, dairy-free, no butter or oil, no added sugar.
Chocolate spreads are unhealthy
A healthy chocolate spread? How is it possible? If we only use healthy ingredients to make our spread from scratch, it will turn out super healthy. Not using any oils, processed sugars, dairy is a good plan for a healthy recipe.
How about the sweetness
A chocolate spread has to be sweet, right? Yes, but there is a workaround for this particular recipe, we are gonna use the healthiest sweetener there is, dates. Dates might not work in every single recipe as a sugar replacement, but here, the soft medjool dates are perfekt. Date are not only sweet, they also add a caramelly flavor to the spread.
Is cacao unhealthy?
There are many opinions on the health benefits and dangers of cacao out there. If you don’t wanna use cacao, use carob instead.
A mini food processor is amazing especially for vegan spreads. It is super handy if you don't have too much space in the kitchen to waste on a full-size food-processor and can do almost any job a regular food-processor does. Banana ice cream, veggie rice and pesto are easily made in small batches.
Who doesn’t love apple pies? And this raw vegan version of an apple pie is not just delicious, it’s even healthy. A super healthy no bake apple pie.
Why this raw vegan apple pie is better than any other pie
Raw vegan cakes and pies are not as hard to make as baked once, but still take quite some time to prep. Here, I wanna share a quick and easy everyday raw vegan apple pie recipe that you will wanna make every day and it will not eat up much of your time. It’s one of these recipes that are faster to make than to eat.

It’s that easy to make an apple pie
You definitely don’t have to be a raw food chef or to buy expensive exotic superfoods to create a dessert you can enjoy daily. The very first homemade apple pie I remember eating at my 3rd cousin’s. She baked when I visited her family many years ago. It was, as cakes usually are, a vegetarian cake and being a vegetarian back then, I tried a slice. She advertised it as the most effortless and quick recipe she had ever baked. I took her around 40 minutes to wipe it off. I can’t quite remember the taste of it, but it was a fluffy dough with a thin layer of apples on top. I ate up the apples, they were the best. No wonder my fav apple pie nowadays is made without the dough entirely.
It’s not a birthday cake
This pie is basically just the filling of an apple pie, which is the best part of a pie for me anyways. Surprisingly, I completely lost my passion for apples over the years are rarely eat any, but this apple pie convinces me to eat 3-4 apple in one sitting every time I make it. This apple pie is what it is, it doesn’t pretend to be anything else, anything better, anything fancy. It is simple and honest recipe and has the potential to become a stable dessert or even to replace lunch.

Dates are a healthier sugar alternative. It is better than agave or honey. Not that we are considering honey as a possible food, it’s a product bees invested hard labor in to have food for themselves and who are we to steel it, right?! Back to the date, dates are the best.

A good blender is simply irreplaceable.
Dehydrator turns fruit into delicious healthy treats.
If you like veggie noodles, you should get a spiralizer.
A food processor is a very useful tool in the raw food kitchen. I use it for veggie rice, cake bases, and for grinding and cutting veggies. Therefore, I got a food processor fitted with an s-knife (sabatier blade) as well as with different cutting and shredding and slicing discs.
This one is similar to the one I use in Germany and while traveling in Europe.
This one I used while living in the US and Costa Rica.

In in love with raw vegan recipes. Raw food is not only super tasty and easy to prep, it is also incredibly versatile and exciting. Give one of my recipes a try.
I like the Blendtec blender for its powerful but dull blades. It is easy to clean and it is safe. The big jar is perfect for smoothies and soups. The twisted jars are perfect for dry ingredients for making raw breads, cakes and crackers. I’ve used it for half a year now and am pretty happy with the results.
There are some significant shortcoming like with every other appliance, but compared to all the other blenders I’ve tried so far, it’s the best for me at the moment. However, I do not recommend or promote this blender due to various shortcomings.
Sure, you can by vegan milks at a store, but it’s so easy to make your own raw vegan milk at home. Plan-based milks are not only tastier and healthier than cow’s milk, they are also so versatile and fun to make.
We used to love chocolate milk. The taste, the sweetness, the flavor of cocoa. Not the unhealthy ingredients of it or the animal-cruelty caused by the milk production for sure. So here is an amazing hemp-based alternative. It is healthier and even more delicious. There are so many more good non-dairy vegan substitutes for milk we will share with you this year!

Some health food stores sell them, but we prefer buying them online. It’s usually cheaper and saves time looking for them at a store.

Before traveling to Barcelona, we searched for organic options online and new there are organic shops, but we had no idea there so many so great fully organic shops, vegan stores and raw vegan foods. We hope we can help you to plan your shopping in Barcelona. If you are not from here, keep in mind that some shops are closed during the noon, some till 5pm. On a Sunday, the stores will be closed as well, also check for national holidays to avoid surprises. We didn’t get the chance to go to farmers markets, maybe there were not so many during December when we were here, or we just were overwhelmed with the other shopping options. If you find an interesting organic market, let me know in the comments below.
Ecocentre Supermercado Vegano
Ecocentre Supermercado Vegano is a fully vegan and organic market in central Barcelona. They have lots of staples and vegan specialty products like vegan cheeses, vegan milks, organic supplements and superfoods, raw vegan snacks and vegan ice cream. They don’t sell produce, so we buy mostly snacks and ice cream here.
They also sell vegan shoes, cookbooks, cleaning products and natural cosmetic produsts here. Definitely worth a visit if you are looking for organic and natural food, beauty products and alternatives for meat and dairy.
The Living Food
It’s a fully vegan and organic shop with lots of specialty products you won’t get anywhere else. The selection of vegan supplements is exceptional. We always find amazing raw vegan treats, chocolate, cookies here.
Our absolute favorite product here it their artisanal raw vegan cheese. They have quite a few different varieties ranging from fresh spreadable cheese to harder aged cheese. An absolute paradise for vegans, raw vegans and everyone interested in good food.
More about The Living Food and their amazing vegan cheeses here. You can try the cheeses at the raw vegan restaurant Petit Brot.
The Framers
Might be a little hard to find as the shop moved a couple houses further, check their Facebook for opening hours here.
We love shopping at this organic market, it has this farm-to-table feel to it. Great variety of seasonal organic produce and affordable prices. They have fruit that other chain markets don’t have. All produce is always organic, some other products might not be, better to ask.
They have a bulk section where you can shop zero waste style. For the produce, they only have plastic bags, so bring your reusable one.
Reusable produce bags
El Manà Supermercat Ecològic
A small organic store close to Sagrada Familia. Small selection of fruit, more local vegetables. Vegan products and raw freeze dried fruits and veggies.
Didn’t take any pictures inside the store the first 2 times we went as I was planning on coming here regularly. Though it was the nearest store to where we stayed, we ended up shopping at Molsa instead.
Molsa
We had one Molsa shop near by and loved it. The fruit and veggie section was great. Everything was fresh and the variety decent. The shop is all organic and sells many vegan products like milk, tempe, tofu as well as staples like organic beans and pasta.
We also went to another Molsa store and the produce there was also great, they had a produce fridge with berries, that the other Molsa didn’t have. There are more stores of this chain across Barcelona, google them to find the nearest one.
Obbio
Obbio is one of the larger organic stores in Barcelona. They have a great variety of fruits, veggies, greens. As well as a big range of vegan products. The produce was on the pricier side, but the variety was much better than at smaller stores.
The speciality are raw nuts and raw nuts butters. Also, the bulk section is incredible.
Veritas
Many stores across Barcelona. Great produce and many vegan products.
A fully vegan store sells the raw ice cream that we love, all kind of vegan meats, cheeses, milks. Also found natural vegan beauty products I’ve never seen before anywhere.
Lidl
Looking for organic at a discounter is pretty much the last resort for 3 reasons: the variety is limited and 2 of 3 fruits might be sold out and if not, the fruit is extremely unripe. Second, everything is in a plastic dish and then wrapt in plastic and more plastic. And third, it’s more expensive than at the organic store. This aside, the Lidl we went to in Barcelona had some organic fruit ad veggies one could survive on for a week. They also had lots of organic staples, even soy milk and tofu, beans, carbons beans, rice, potatoes and pasta.
Organic Market
A large beautiful store. Fruits, veggies, all kinds of organic products. We found raw vegan chocolate here.

El Cau Cooperativa
A fantastic local produce store. We couldn’t shop here often, it was to far from where we lived, but if we stay nearby the next time, we definitely go there regularly! Fresh local organic produce and the prices are good too.
Vega Raw Orgànic
A vegan store with a restaurant. Lots of to-go options and ice cream. Some raw vegan snack.
Thank you so much for reading.
If you found this interesting or helpful and would like to give back, I would be more than happy to receive one virtual smoothie from you.You can paypal me one right here.
Thank you so much for being here.
Hope to see you again, soon.
Much love, Ina.

Created by Miró himself, Fundació Joan Miró offers an incredible overview of Miró’s art throughout his life. We loved the incredible building, that took us on a long art walk inside and outside.
The museum has an very useful audioguide, it’s not free, but totally worth it. It has explanations to many paintings, as well as several walk and supplemental information you will only find out if you play with the audio guide around.
At the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona we enjoyed the most insightful multi-media exhibition “After the End of the World” on environmental challenges our planet faces now and will in the future.
The Museu Picasso holds a beautiful collection Pablo Picasso’s early works. Not many interesting later work, but definitely worth the visit. The audio guide is very helpful, it’s not allowed to take pictures inside the museum.

But it is also an exhibition about how we will reach the world of the latter half of the 21st century, and about our society’s responsibility to the generations who will be born and grow up in it.”

Lost and Found is held in an amazing Train Station, what a magical setup for a stylish flea market.
A polished flea market with mostly hipster vintage clothes and furniture. You will get exactly the same hand picked clothes that you get at the vintage stores in Barcelona for the same price as in the store. Quality and condition of the clothes is not very good, mostly cheap brands like c&a rebranded with the logo of the vintage store. The furniture and household items are mostly from the 60ise to 80ies and for a flea market kind of pricey. Nice vibes, music, perfect place to hand out for an hour on a Sunday.
Happes on weekends, for details check out their facebook page.

Saturdays and on some weekdays
One of the biggest flea markets in Barcelona. It’s held in an beautiful modern spacious hall and is floated with diverse items from antique shop quality silverware to rubbish. On the upper level, there are the more organised stools with antique and new furniture and antique silverware, which I found way too pricey. Downstairs, there are tables and piles of trash and probably treasures, which we couldn’t find the one time we went. Around Xmas we saw piles of cheap figurines for the cribs and dusty Xmas tree decor, there are piles of cheap weathered cosmetics, newspapers, broken electronics. All the sellers appear to be resellers offering a consistent assortelent goods. Missing are the locals, who sell their own or grandma’s stuff. Overall, the market has a charm of a Waste Sorting Plant with a better smell and in a too fancy of a hall. Nevertheless, it was a great experience to see this unique place.
